I must have been a deprived child.
I’ve never been to the circus. Or if I have been, I sure don’t remember it.
So when the circus came to Worthington the first year I lived here, I desperately wanted to go.
But it didn’t work out.
In fact, it didn’t work out for the first few years I was here.
But this year was different.
It was on a day when I could take some time and go enjoy the show.
So I got a couple of tickets, called up my friend, Jared Rademacher, and we went.
I have to admit, it was a blast.
Of course, two single guys, both around 30 years old, at the circus was a little strange.
But I didn’t let that stop me from having a good time.
Some of the acts were very impressive.
They had tigers doing tricks. Some of those cats were pretty large animals.
The trapeze acts were pretty impressive, including one who was hanging by her hair. Of course, I could only wonder, “What kind of conditioner does she use?”
There was juggling and dog acts, but hands down, my favorite was the elephants.
Six elephants came into the arena. Their ability to stand on very small stools — and then balance on their front feet — was amazing. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to see elephants in Worthington, and these were incredible.
The final act of the show was motorcycle tricks.
They started with one rider in a giant ball. He rode around and went upside down.
Then, they added two.
And a third.
How they didn’t crash was amazing.
But it was a spectacular end to the show.
I heard unofficially about 700 people attended the two shows.
It was a great turnout for a fun Sunday afternoon event.
While it was my first circus, I sure hope it isn’t my last.
I can’t wait until it comes to town again next year!
