It has been a long time.
But I’m still here.
I have taken quite a bit of time off in the month of August. Recently, I was gone for eight work days.
I honestly don’t remember the last time I had that many days off in a row.
I didn’t do too much. I didn’t take any grand trips.
But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun.
The first weekend I was gone my parents and I went to Sioux Falls. We stayed in hotel for a couple of nights. We saw the sights. We went to the mall and out to eat. We saw a movie.
But two of the events really stuck out for me. The first was the zoo. I don’t know what it is, but I really enjoy zoos. I had been to the Sioux Falls zoo before, but it had been a long, long, long time. We went with some family friends who had three small children. Let me tell you, that was an experience. They were full of energy — and they loved me. They all wanted me to come look at this or that. It was a blast, but it was very tiring.
The second event I really enjoyed was Falls Park. I don’t think I had ever been to the falls, and it was a grand sight. To think there is something like that so close is amazing. There was water falling over the rocks, and I think I took about 50 photos of the park.
After just staying around Worthington for most of the following week, I took off and went to the Cities with my friend, Jared.
Our main goal was to go to Canterbury to watch some horse racing.
But we had some fun while we were there as well.
We left on a Friday afternoon and made the trek to downtown Minneapolis. We checked into our hotel and relaxed for a bit.
But then, it was time for the game.
We bought tickets to go watch the Vikings play the San Diego Chargers in their third preseason game.
The game itself was pretty boring — only one touchdown was scored all day. But we had good seats, and it was fun to be in the Metrodome again. It might the last time I’ll be in the building.
On Saturday, it was off to Canterbury for some racing.
There were nine races that day.
We put a few dollars on each one. And I only won on one of them.
It was fan appreciation day, so we were able to get in free.
We got a program and looked through the different races and how to bet.
I’ll be honest, I had no idea what I was doing when I was there.
At first, the numbers and horses didn’t mean anything to me. Sure, I watch the major races on TV, but that was just for fun.
This was for money.
After a few races, I had a better idea as to what I was doing.
It still didn’t help.
I did win on the last race. It wasn’t a big score, but it was the thrill of the win I so desperately craved.
We finished out our weekend and style, but then it was back to reality.
Unfortunately, work calls.
And after the two weekends I had, I might need to get a second job to pay off my credit card bill.
